The SSSTS and SMSTS courses are the two of the main safety courses that have been designed for the construction industry by CITB as part of the Site Safety Plus suite of courses. If you are working in the construction and building sector, then these courses are ideal to take to enhance your skillset and step into a supervisory or management role in the industry.
Some courses in the construction sector will be more applicable to others, depending on what stage you are at in your career. Today we’ll be focusing on the SSSTS and SMSTS courses which are both now available via our online virtual training courses.

SMSTS – What is Site Manager Safety Training?
This site manager qualification is perfect for those who’d like to achieve a higher level of responsibility within the construction industry or if you are a supervisor and would like to develop your management skills.
It’s also a great course to open up new opportunities for management roles within the industry.
Once completing this course, you will be able to:
- Manage and implement health and safety and environmental legislation.
- Apply the latest guidance and industry practises to the team.
- Enhance health and safety skills within the team.
- Awareness of legal responsibilities.
If you are a Site Manager or site foreman who is involved in organising, planning, monitoring and administration workforces, then the CITB SMSTS course is for you.
After passing this course, the certificate is valid for five years, and then you can take the SMSTS refresher course to renew the accreditation.
SSSTS – What is Site Supervisor Safety Training?
The SSSTS course is ideal for construction Site Supervisors, Team Leaders and First-line Managers in the construction industry who would like to enhance their skills and progress in their roles.
This course is designed to teach the importance and benefits of risk assessment procedures and how to effectively communicate health and safety regulations to the team.
By enrolling on this course, you will be able to:
- Gain a better understanding of issues concerning health and safety, the environment and welfare.
- Understand and know your legal responsibilities and supervisory duties on a construction site.
- How to effectively communicate good practices.
- Carry out risk assessments.
- Ensure an efficient and safe working environment.
Similar to the SMSTS course, the SSSTS certificate is valid for five years, after which you can then take the SSSTS refresher course.
So what’s the difference between SMSTS and SSSTS?
SMSTS or SSSTS? Which course is right for you? If you are a supervisor, team leader or a line manager then the Site Supervisor Safety Training course is ideal especially if you are looking to get a role with that level of responsibility.
For a more managerial role, such as a project leader or site manager, then the SMSTS training course is what you should take.
Although not necessary, once completing the SSSTS course, many people choose to progress onto the SMSTS course to further enhance their skillset and open up new job opportunities.
